Wells Generating Station (239 MW) - Wharnclife, Mississagi River

The Wells Generating Station is a two-unit hydroelectric generating station located on the Mississagi River. The station was designed and built between 1968 and 1970 and has an installed capacity of 239 MW at a head of 65 metres.

Located 86 km downstream of Aubrey Falls, this station is the second of three stations along the Mississagi River. Wells and Rayner share the same headpond (Tunnel Lake), dam and sluiceway, and operate in unison to maximize and optimize capacity and energy. Wells handles the bulk of power production at the site, and operates as a peaking station. The Wells units were constructed with turbines placed below the tailrace water level for increased efficiency, and are equipped with condense features which allow them to provide ancillary services to the IESO. Wells is critical to the restoration of the Northern Power System due to its proximity to Rayner Black Start facility.

Wells is fed by two penstocks supplying each unit, separated by a single pier. Each inlet consists of a single water passage and is equipped with a trash rack. Each inlet has a separate vertical lift headgate and a service opening upstream of the headgate. Each penstock is 130 metres in length.

Wells is connected to the existing Hydro One 230kV circuits T28P and T27P, and connects with Mississagi TS.

This hydroelectric generating station generates approximately 388,295 MWh of renewable energy per year.
